The light holds for eleven seconds, then gives up. You can hear it decide. I stayed for another hour in case it wanted to try again.

no wind
First light. I assumed it was the neighbour with a torch. It was not the neighbour. It hovered, it hummed, it left. I did not move. Field at first light RESULT: NO LIFT

damp grass
They came in closer. Close enough that I could see the underside was dusty. Somebody up there does not clean. Craft low over the fence RESULT: NO LIFT
NIGHT 005still
very quiet
Direct contact. The beam found me, held me, and did nothing else. We stood there together, both of us waiting for something to happen. Nothing happened. Beam holding the subject RESULT: NO LIFT

cold
They brought four more of me. I do not know where they got them. They lined us up, scanned each one, and picked me again. That is either a compliment or a filing error. Five identical subjects in the field RESULT: NO LIFT
NIGHT 010clear
last one
Final attempt. Full power, longer hold, and a noise I had not heard before. Then the light went off, and the field was just a field again. Ten for ten. Subject after the tenth attempt RESULT: NO LIFT
